Longridge High School A Maths & Computing College
A Maths & Computing College

Welcome to the website of Longridge High School
We are a successful, happy and thriving comprehensive high school with Maths and Computing specialist status, situated in the beautiful Ribble Valley. Understandably, we are very proud of all our pupils. In 2008, 71% of our Year 11 students achieved five or more GCSEs at grades A* - C and there were many impressive individual performances.
RESPECT | GROW | LEARN | TOGETHER

Our mission statement above is central to everything we do as a school community and these core values underpin all aspects of school life for students, staff and governors. We hope you enjoy reading about our school and the achievements of our students.

BRILLIANT INSPECTION!
A WORD FROM THE HEAD

We are celebrating our recent successful Ofsted Inspection, which took place on the 13th and 14th May.  Inspectors judged the school as 'good' overall with  outstanding features. Inspectors felt the school provides, 'a very safe and caring environment' where staff 'at all levels are dedicated and ambitious for the students to do well.' Students told inspectors they had 'great confidence in their teachers.' The inspection team said that 'students relish their classes'. They also commented on the 'strong sense of community', within the school. We are very pleased, as a school community, with the report. It confirms our view that this is an  excellent school!

The inspectors highlighted our pupils' views that lessons are 'stimulating' and 'buzzing'. The Inspection Team said pupils at Longridge High are 'friendly, approachable, confident and mature.'  They also felt that the relationships between students and adults are 'excellent', and that this was the basis for 'creating an environment where young people can learn and grow in self esteem and confidence.' The Inspectors  commented on the 'good progress' made by students, due to the 'high expectations' set by their teachers. A particularly poignant phrase for all of us is their assertion that 'children make progress in a happy and safe environment.'

I would like to thank all of you for your continued support of the school. I would also like to thank all the students for representing the school so well, and the   Leadership Team, all the staff and Governors for their continued hard work and dedication! We are celebrating our 50 year milestone later this year  and we have great plans for the future. Work is due to begin later in the year to develop first class music    facilities for pupils and the local community.  We have several new courses such as the Diploma in Environment and Land based Studies beginning in September with more new courses on the way.

As a school our aim is to keep moving forward and  continue to provide an excellent education for all our pupils!

Well Done, Everyone!

Newman College Visit
23rd June 2009

On Thursday 18/6/09, a group of 24 year 9 pupils and 2 teachers, Mrs Mercier and Mr Connell, attended a language day at Newman College in Preston. Pupils were offered the chance to do a lesson in a language they already know (French or German) followed by 2 more lessons in languages they had no prior knowledge of (Spanish and Italian). A great day was had by all due to the fun, interactive nature of the lessons taught and to the good weather which allowed pupils to take advantage of Newman's facilities. The pupils had a tremendous day and would love to go back again!

Promoting Blackburn Rovers Abroad
10th June 2009

On Thursday 21st May, the Modern Foreign Language department took a small group of year 9 to Ewood Park in Blackburn for a 'Promoting Rovers Abroad' day. Blackburn Rovers offered a full day to visit the stadium and film a tour in German and/or French.  We had the opportunity to set up our own interviews in the Media Theatre (where the manager's press conferences take place) with the pupils themselves taking the place of the player and answering all questions in the target language. Pupils enjoyed being creative and producing amazing videos to promote the club. Well done!

Longridge High School Under 13 Girls Football team
27th May 2009

On Tuesday 19th May the Longridge High School Under 13 Girls Football team topped off what has been an already great season with the FA Premier League Schools National Final at Old Trafford, Manchester.  Following victories in the local and regional rounds of this competition, that had seen 1000 teams from around the country enter,  the girls represented local Premiership club Blackburn Rovers in the final round.  The tournament was made up of teams representing fellow Premiership clubs Newcastle United, Wigan Athletic, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Arsenal and Fulham.

The girls were given the full premiership player treatment which started on the Monday evening, when they stayed overnight in the Ramada Hotel on Salford Quays.  After an early rise and a hearty breakfast on Tuesday morning, the girls made the short trip to the Old Trafford ground.  Once at the ground the girls were directed to the players changing rooms to get into their Blackburn Rovers kits.   After watching the draw take place at pitchside, and listening to some inspirational words from former Manchester United and England captain Bryan Robson, the girls then went back to the changing rooms to prepare for the start of the tournament.

All the teams were led out onto the pitch, through the players tunnel, by Premiership Referees Howard Webb, Mark Clattenburg, Mark Halsey and Phil Dowd.  Manchester United Mascot 'Fred the Red' was also on hand to add to the occasion.  We were also lucky enough to have a coach full of supporters who had made the trip down to Manchester to cheer the girls on.

The girls first game in Group B was against a very good Newcastle United side, many of whom had played in last year's final at Reading and were also part of a squad who had reached the quarter finals of the English schools 11-a-side competition.  After conceding 2 early goals the Longridge girls seemed to get back into the game and played some really good football.  Unfortunately, the Newcastle side went onto to score a third goal, effectively ending the contest.

Following this game the girls focussed on their next game against Wigan Athletic, whom they had beaten in the regional round.  Captain Hannah Crook tried to lift her players spirits in the break between matches, and as the game against Wigan drew nearer the team were feeling much more positive.  Out on the pitch against their local rivals, the girls took an early lead from captain Hannah Crooks headed goal.  This goal was followed by another 2 goals from Shakira Allen and another from Hannah Crook, before Wigan pulled one back.  Not wanting Wigan to get back into the game, the girls tightened their defence.  In the end, Captain Hannah Crook completed her hat trick to make it a 4-1 victory to Blackburn Rovers.

The final game was against Aston Villa saw the girls go a goal down very shortly after the start.  Once again though the girls showed great spirit, and they pressed the Villa girls defences and were unlucky to not score.  As half time approached thunder and lightening ripped through the skies above Old Trafford.  The weather conditions forced all players off the field.  The referees then took the decision to abandon the game completely, a decision which obviously disappointed all our players.

As the result of our final game had no bearing on the final standings in our group, the final of the tournament was between Newcastle United and their north east neighbours Middlesbrough.

The whole day was a magnificient occasion and an experience that will never be forgotten by the girls from Longridge High School.  Well done to all the players - the whole school are immensely proud of your achievements!!!
